Ubiquity - film by Bregtje van der Haak - Turn it off!
Turn it off! is an awareness campaign on the documentary film Ubiquity by director Bregtje van der Haak. How connected do you want to be?
[Yoo-bik-wi-tee] The place of being everywhere at once
The internet can now connect anyone, anywhere, anytime. But some people cannot stand the electromagnetic radiation from the wireless networks that surround us. They feel the pulse of the wireless world on their bodies. Are they the canaries in the coal mine?
Around the world, tech companies and telephone providers are expanding their digital networks. The internet is becoming ubiquitous, able to connect anyone to anyone else. But some people are hypersensitive to electromagnetic radiation. They feel the invisible pulses of Wi-Fi routers, smartphones and cell towers in their bodies and are forced to flee the connected world. But as digital networks expand, will there be a place left on the planet for them? Are they the canaries in the coal mine, alerting us to the invisible web that surrounds all of us?
In Ubiquity, director Bregtje van der Haak shows us the lives of three digital exiles. She presents a starkly different perspective from the shiny advertisements for smartphones and smart devices. What does the world look like through the eyes of someone with electromagnetic sensitivity? What do the invisible pulses sound like them? Where will they find refuge as the global network of cell towers closes in on them? In the documentary film Ubiquity, electromagnetic radiation becomes painfully audible and tangible.
“With this film, I want to explore the impact of new wireless technologies and ubiquitous internet connectivity. Who controls the power of the tech companies that are changing our world so profoundly? And is there something like ‘the right to remain offline’?” – Bregtje van der Haak
